Dog Training – Reap What You Sow

Dog training has evolved over the decades. What used to be the accepted training technique of jerking on a choke chain and forcing a dog to do what you want has given way to a more humane way of training: reward. The reward may be in the form of a tidbit, a toy, a spoken ‘good boy’ or a pet. Dogs, for the most part, want to please their handlers. They are very forgiving of a human’s bad temper or tendency to strike first and praise later.

However, like any sentient creature, they will only take so much abuse. Dogs’ natural instinct is flight or fight. Backed into a corner by a cruel person the dog may feel it has to strike back in order to survive. When that happens someone may get bitten or even mauled. Certain breeds have gained a questionable reputation for biting, among the most common, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepherds. These are also some of the most loyal and loving dog breeds. There are others but they are usually in the minority.

Accessing dog bite statistics shows that children are far more likely to be bitten than adults; boys are statistically higher than girls. Male dogs that are chained and intact are more likely to bite than their loose, neutered counterparts with female dogs less apt to bite than males.

There is a segment of our population that thinks dog fighting is a sport. They breed the winners of fights to get fierce aggressive dogs to bet on. Their pups are sold for huge amounts of money only to fight and breed more dogs of the same nature. These dogs are an aberration, an anomaly that man has created to further his own warlike nature. It is also illegal.

If you give a dog affection and treat it with kindness you will have a life-long best friend. Dogs enjoy their relationship with man and serve with him in many different ways. Dogs assist the disabled, guard homes and livestock, go to war and track down criminals. They are companions for children and soothe individuals with high blood pressure or psychological fears. They are used as aids for persons who have had strokes, heart attacks and brain damage. They work paw in hand with different therapists: speech, physical rehabilitation and other disciplines to help individuals on the road to recovery. There is a highly successful program that specializes in helping children overcome difficulties in reading using dogs and other animals.

Law enforcement agencies of all kinds use dogs for finding contraband including explosives and drugs. A dog is sent into a dark place first so as to enable the police officers to apprehend a fleeing and, usually, dangerous criminal. They are used in war to not only aid soldiers but to be a friend when a young person is away from home.

Treat a dog with kindness and he will be kind. Treat him with abuse and cruelty he may still be kind but he may turn into your worst nightmare.
