Dog Training Man’s Best Friend

Dog training can be a heck of a lot of fun or a nightmare -  and everything in between – for any pet lover, depending on a number of factors. Getting it right takes persistence and a lot of patience, even if your pet pooch is generally well-behaved. The trouble with dog training - even the best behaved dog – is that you are trying to get your dog to work against it’s instincts; something that doesn’t happen overnight.

All the same, it is worth sticking with it. A dog can be taught verbal and signaled commands even if it has shown signs of being resistant to training. It boils down to not giving up; telling yourself that you will not be beaten. Getting through to your dog may take time, but when you do, you will see that it was worth it. Educate yourself as to the best way to train and modify that method to suit your dog’s temperament.  Give the particular dog training method enough time to work and understand fully the results you want. Take it one step at a time and do your training in short increments of time. A dog has a fairly short attention span and after 10 or 15 minutes it is time to switch to fun and put away the training. Two or even three short sessions a day will have a greater effect than one long, sustained period of training.

It is important to reward your dog when he does what you ask and this, in the long run, will make things go a lot smoother. Be consistent in your reward and make sure even the smallest step in the direction you want is instantly rewarded. A reward doesn’t always have to be food. A softly spoken ‘good boy’ or a gentle pat lets your dog know you are pleased with his efforts. A ball thrown at just the right moment is a thrill for a dog that loves to fetch.

Dogs really can be man’s best friend. They are fiercely loyal and endlessly entertaining.  They are one of the most popular pets in the world for good reason. If you have begun to feel you will never get your dog to behave it is time to take yourself in hand and start a training regimen that will teach your dog the right way to behave. It can be daunting, at first, but eventually you will see the benefit. Who knows, you may even begin to enjoy dog training.
